Avril Rolph (1945-2018)
On 28th June 2018 Archif Menywod Cymru Women’s Archive Wales lost Avril Rolph, one of its founder members and a committed and long-standing Committee member. Indeed, the Archive was conceived and established following Avril’s research project with Ursula Masson on second-wave feminism in Wales. Once established in 1997-8, Avril served as the Archive’s first secretary and when Ursula died in 2008 she took on the role of Chair, guiding the Archive through the History Roadshow project.
In honour of this huge contribution she was made an Honorary Vice-president of AMC WAW in 2010, but true to her nature she continued to serve the committee as its Administrative Secretary, guiding it through the Charity Commission registration and its subsequent application to become a Charitable Incorporated Institution. She was also one of the main instigators of this new AMCWAW website. Her legal acumen and technical knowledge, as well as her understanding and experience of AMC WAW’s ethos and work, were fundamental to the development and success of the Archive during these years. She was a great champion of women’s rights and of the Archive. But she was also a loyal and kind friend and she will be sorely missed by all her many friends and colleagues.
Donations to Archif Menywod Cymru Women’s Archive Wales in memory of Avril can be sent through Paypal or through our postal address. Thank you very much.
