Archif Menywod Cymru / Women’s Archive Wales promotes the recognition of women in Welsh history and the preservation of sources of women’s history in Wales.

We do this by:

  • Running Innovative Research Projects

    • Setting the Record Straight - Gwir Gofnod o Gyfnod (in progress). Watch some interview clips HERE
    • Century of Hope - Canrif Gobaith (2018-2019). A film, recording the Century of Hope project events and shown as part of the 2020 Eisteddfod AmGen can be viewed HERE.  Although in Welsh, the film is accessible to all.
    • Wales Women’s History Roadshows (2007 - 2010)
    • Voices from the Factory Floor (2013-15)  Project Website
    • Women in World War 1: the Welsh Experience (2015-16)  Project Website

Click on the  link below to read more about these projects.

  • Encouraging knowledge and understanding of the roles women played - and are playing - in Welsh history

  • Asking women and men to donate the records of women’s lives and work in Wales

  • Raising the profile of the lives and work of women in Wales past and present

  • Working with professional archivists across Wales to care for these collections and make them publicly accessible

I Have Chosen:

Photograph of Gertrude Rosewarne, a Red Cross Nurse in the First World War.

I chose this image because it was a very popular one with the British public as it shows a woman in the traditional role as a carer, unlike later images of women munitions workers or members of the armed forces. This photograph of Gertrude Rosewarne was brought to me in the Archive’s Roadshow in Llanelli by her great nephew.
It is an honour to be the President of AMC/WAW because of its valuable work in rescuing the sources of our history and enabling historians to bring our history to a wide audience.
Emeritus Professor Deirdre Beddoe, President and Founder Member of Archif Menywod Cymru/Women’s Archive Wales
